About the test

The online couple test, to take together, that really measures your relationship

The MyLoveLab test is a couple compatibility test built on research in relationship psychology, not a percentage calculated from your first names or zodiac signs. In about fifty adaptive questions, roughly 15 minutes, it measures your relationship across 7 dimensions, identifies your attachment style and gives you your relationship profile out of 24. You take it online, together or solo, long distance if you don’t live in the same place, with no sign-up and anonymously.

Adaptive means the questions change based on your earlier answers: if a topic stands out, the test digs deeper; if not, it moves on. That’s how it stays around 15 minutes while still covering the areas that really matter for your relationship. You can pause at any time and pick up where you left off.

Test your relationship online, together or solo: how it works

Everything happens online, on your phone or computer, with nothing to download. Together, each of you answers separately, about the same relationship, then you compare your two reports. That’s often where it gets interesting, because you see different strengths and different blind spots. Solo, you already get a complete picture of your relationship, seen from where you stand. And if you live long distance, nothing changes: the test adapts to couples who don’t see each other every day.

The 7 dimensions measured

Each dimension gets a score out of 100 and a level: fragile, needs strengthening, solid or excellent. That’s what lets the program suggest starting with the dimension that needs it most, not a generic catalog.

  • Communication and listening

How you talk, listen, and approach the topics that cause friction.

  • Love languages

The gestures, words and attention that make your partner feel they matter.

  • Conflict management

What happens during an argument, and above all how you repair afterward.

  • Intimacy and desire

Physical and emotional closeness, desire, and being able to talk about it without embarrassment.

  • Attachment and security

Feeling you can count on your partner, without constant doubt or surveillance.

  • Shared project

Your shared vision, the decisions you make together, and the future you’re building.

  • Trust and support

How you work as a team through hard times and in everyday life.

Understand each dimension in detail

What you get at the end

  • A global score out of 100 and a detailed score for each dimension.
  • Your attachment style, secure, anxious, avoidant or disorganized, measured with the ECR-R scale.
  • Your top 3 relationship profiles out of 24, with your main profile in detail.
  • Your strengths, your blind spots and your level on each dimension.
  • Access to the guided program, personalized from these results.

A test based on research, not a percentage calculator

On Google, “couple compatibility test” mostly returns calculators: two first names, two birth dates, a percentage. That’s a game, not a measurement. Here, each question is about an observable behavior: what you do when tension rises, how you repair afterward, what makes you feel loved. And each dimension draws on published research: Gottman for conflict, the ECR-R scale for attachment, Bodenmann for support.

The score is not a verdict on your relationship. It’s a snapshot of where you are, across seven separate areas, so you know where to start. And because the test is based on research, we also say where its limits are: it doesn’t predict whether a couple will last, and its score hasn’t been statistically validated yet, which we explain on the method page.

How this test is built

The test rests on three pillars of couple psychology. The Gottman method for communication and conflict: more than 50 years of observing couples, the four horsemen, repair attempts, complemented by the work of Joel et al. (PNAS, 2020) on predictors of relationship quality. Attachment theory, from Bowlby and Ainsworth to Hazan and Shaver, with the ECR-R scale (Fraley, Waller and Brennan, 2000) to measure your style, and Sue Johnson’s EFT approach to repairing the bond. Finally, Gary Chapman’s 5 love languages, Sternberg’s triangular theory, Esther Perel’s responsive desire model and Bodenmann’s dyadic coping for affection, intimacy and mutual support.

Frequently asked questions about the test

Is the MyLoveLab couple test free?

Yes. The test is free, with no sign-up and no credit card. You get your report right away, at the end of the questions.

How many questions are there?

About fifty, chosen as you answer. Because the test is adaptive, the exact number varies slightly from person to person. Plan on about 15 minutes.

How do we take the test together?

Each of you answers separately, on your own phone, about the same relationship, then you compare your two reports. It works long distance too, if you don’t live in the same place. You can also take it solo: you get a complete picture of your relationship, seen from where you stand.

Can the test tell me if my relationship will last?

No, and be wary of anyone who promises that. The test shows where you stand on seven dimensions that research links to couple stability, like how you handle conflict or repair after an argument. It’s a starting snapshot, not a prediction: what you do with it matters more than the score.

What if my relationship scares me?

If you’re afraid of your partner, or you feel controlled, monitored or put down, a couple test is not the right tool, ours included. We wrote a separate page, with nothing to sell, covering the signs to recognize and the numbers to call. In France, call 3919 (free, anonymous) or 17 in immediate danger. Elsewhere, contact your local domestic violence helpline.

What is a relationship profile?

It’s the combination of your attachment style (secure, anxious, avoidant or disorganized) and your dominant relationship pattern (Giver, Protector, Adventurer, Fusional, Independent or Builder). 4 styles × 6 patterns = 24 profiles, each with its strengths and watch points.

What happens after the test?

Your results unlock the MyLoveLab program: one short session every day, chosen from your scores, to make progress dimension by dimension. You can also stop at the report.

Does the test replace couples therapy?

No. It’s a tool to understand your relationship and make progress day to day, not a clinical diagnosis. If your relationship is going through a serious crisis or you feel unsafe, turn to a professional.
